This past summer, Covid-19 created a challenging environment for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing summer internships and real-world work experiences. As summer 2020 approached, Flatiron collaborated with Harvard Business School to address this challenge head-on.
In June 2020, Flatiron partnered with Harvard Business School to launch a virtual 8-week Data Science Bootcamp for 25 of their MBA students. Over the first six weeks of the program, Flatiron provided participants with a custom curriculum, specifically designed to help them leverage big data across their future career paths. In the final two weeks, participants completed a live client practicum. All participants were paired with companies and required to complete real-world data science projects. Clients and projects ranged from a furniture company pivoting from a B2C to a B2B business model, to a software company aggregating customer lifecycle data to increase retention, to a non-profit advocacy group analyzing youth voter turnout trends.
"Flatiron did a great job sourcing projects that were very aligned with our goals and research interests. A classmate and I partnered with Young Invincibles, a non-profit research and advocacy group, to better understand the drivers of voter turnout among young adults. Using census demographic data and surveys about voter behavior, we helped Young Invincibles focus their voter engagement strategy by developing a granular data-driven understanding of youth voter turnout. I loved putting my new skills to work for such a worthwhile cause!"
Paige Tsai (MBA 2020)
Through this program, HBS students were able to spend their summer learning key new skills and participate in real-world client experiences. Check out Harvard Business School’s blog post on the program for a look at how the students described their experience.
